BKC Spring 2019

Eureka! Ελλάδα, a new Civilization to explore!

In Catalonia, we call setciències “seven sciences” someone who flaunts about their knowledge, abilities or qualities.

This expression refers the liberal arts, also known as the seven liberal arts, which were those skills that in ancient Greece were absolutely necessary for a free person to know in order to participate in civic life and becoming a warrior. Besides body training, someone who was destined for military service needed to complete an academic education based on the “expression of intellect or Trivium” (language, logic and speech as an art) and “intellect or Quadrivium” (time, numbers, space and motion).

AGORA

Although a lot of things have changed since then, the art of language is still an essential part of any society. Considering this precious value, this new season of Civilizations has an Agora to think, discuss, share, play and create with all our Big Kids Friends!

Our agenda will include: Greek Currency, Olympic Games, Architecture, Design our city and Art!

MYTHS AND TALES

All of us pretended we had superpowers at some point in our lives. Big Kids love to show the ones that have been chosen by them everyday! That's why I'm so excited to introduce to them some of Greek mythology's main characters and its many stories!

Pandora, Pegasus, Troya and Echo will be the first ones we talk about!

φιλοσοφία or "love of wisdom"

Big Kids will meet the most important philosophers, their thoughts and values every class:

  • Socrates and Plato agree on a key idea that reasoning and truth can only be gained through dialogue.
  • Happiness, for Aristotle, is not a state but an activity manifested over an entire lifetime. When we play we don't look for happiness, we have fun with the game!
  • We do not imitate, but are a model to others. Pericles
  • Good habits formed at youth make all the difference. Aristotle
  • The secret to humor is surprise. Aristotle
  • There is no harm in repeating a good thing. Plato
  • “Love is born into every human being[...] it tries to make one out of two and heal the wound of human nature.” Plato
  • What we achieve inwardly will change outer reality. Plutarch
