Talking to Toddlers… about time change

October 8, 2015

As children become more aware of the world around them, they begin to wonder about the way things are. These new critical functions are driven by the three-lettered quest to know… “why”…

While their curiosity can raise all kinds of difficult questions, as teachers, we always strive to give the best answer we can. And if we don’t know the answer, we make it a project to discover it together. That’s what the internet is for!

This month, as we celebrate the glories of autumn, there are a lot of questions about change. Why do we need to wear a sweater? Why do we keep making pumpkin pie even though no one eats it? Why is the moon out so early? And the one question that no adult, teacher or parent, can ever answer:

Why do we change the time in the fall?

The truth is, there is no reason to change time in the fall. Or the spring. There’s no daylight to be saved by daylight savings time, and the random flipping of hours one way or another serves literally no purpose.

Police incident reports show an increase in accidents on the days directly following the time change, and every parent complains about the disruption to the just-finally-established sleep regime. People miss appointments, and there is no saving of anything whatsoever. Why do we change time? We don’t know.

When innocent children ask questions of us, they do so in order to understand. If there is no reason for the things that happen in the world, how can we explain it? The answer is: we can’t.

Professionally, this is untenable. How can teachers teach, if there is no lesson? How can we educate, when the reason is arbitrary and unknowable? The answer is: we can’t.

And this year, at Buddings, we won’t.

After years of inauthentic, unsatisfying answers to children’s questions about time change, we are forced to take a stand. We can no longer stand by and knowingly falsify their experience of the world. There is no extra daylight! Time is already an artificial construct! It doesn’t make any sense!

Stop the Change you don’t want to see in the World! No more Time Change!
